How to Sell Printable Cards on Etsy

Cards and invitations are the highest-volume digital category on Etsy, and the most seasonal. Buyers arrive knowing the occasion, the recipient and roughly what they want to spend. This page covers the 25 card types that sell, the sizing rules that prevent refunds, when to list for each occasion, and the one mistake that gets shops suspended.

Why cards and invites sell in volume

Cards have the shortest decision cycle of any digital category. Somebody has a birthday on Saturday, it is Thursday night, and a printable card solves the problem in ten minutes. That urgency is why the category converts well even for shops with no review history.

The trade-off is price. A single card design usually sells between $2 and $6, which is lower than almost anything else you can list. Volume and repeat occasions are what make the category work, not margin per sale.

Invitations behave differently and are worth treating as a separate business. A birthday party invitation is bought once, but an editable template that the buyer personalises themselves can carry $8 to $15 because it replaces a design job rather than a shop trip.

Sizes, formats and the refund you can design out

Most refund requests on printable cards come from one question the listing failed to answer: what size is this and how do I print it. Answer it in the second image, not the description.

Five by seven inches is the dominant printable card size and the one to lead with. A5 is the European equivalent and worth including in the same file. Add 4x6 if the design suits a photo-print service, because that is the cheapest way for a buyer to get it printed.

Decide early whether the card is folded or flat and say so plainly. A folded 5x7 prints on a single sheet with a centre fold, which confuses buyers who expected two separate sides. Include a one-page printing guide in the download. It costs you nothing and removes most support messages before they are sent.

Seasonal timing, and why most sellers list too late

Card demand is almost entirely calendar-driven, and Etsy needs time to work out that a new listing is relevant. A Christmas card published in December is competing against listings that have been accumulating favourites since September.

The practical rule is to list eight to ten weeks before the occasion. Christmas cards go up in September, Valentine's in early January, Mother's Day in February. Nothing is lost by being early because the listing simply sits there, and being early is the only way to have history when the search volume arrives.

Year-round occasions are the ballast underneath the spikes. Birthdays, anniversaries, thank you cards and new baby announcements do not have a season, and a shop built only on seasonal cards goes quiet for months at a time.

Etsy SEO for card listings, and the trademark trap

Card searches are unusually specific because the buyer knows the occasion and the recipient. That makes the winning title formula occasion plus recipient plus tone: "funny birthday card for sister printable" beats "birthday card" every time, and it is winnable by a new shop.

Use the tags for the recipient variations you could not fit in the title. Sister, brother, mum, dad, best friend, colleague and grandparent are each separate searches, and one design can honestly serve several of them.

The trap is trademarks, and it is the single most common cause of card listings being removed. Character names, film references, song lyrics and brand names are all owned by somebody, and Etsy removes first and asks later. It is not worth risking an established shop for the extra traffic that a character name brings.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a printable Etsy card be?
Five by seven inches is the standard and the size to lead with, with A5 as the European equivalent. Adding 4x6 is worth it because buyers can print that cheaply at a photo service. State the sizes and whether the card is folded or flat in your second listing image.
How much do printable cards sell for on Etsy?
A single card design commonly sells between $2 and $6. Editable invitation templates carry more, usually $8 to $15, because the buyer is replacing a design job rather than buying a one-off file. Bundles of several related cards typically sit between $8 and $15.
When should I list seasonal cards?
Eight to ten weeks before the occasion. Etsy needs time to build ranking history for a new listing, so a Christmas card published in December is competing against listings that have been gathering favourites since September. Nothing is lost by listing early.
Can I sell cards with character or brand names on them?
No, and this is the most common reason card listings get removed. Character names, film references, song lyrics and brand names are owned by somebody, and Etsy tends to remove the listing first and review afterwards. Use occasion and style words instead.
Do buyers want folded or flat cards?
Both sell, but you must say which yours is. A folded 5x7 prints on one sheet with a centre fold, which surprises buyers expecting two separate sides. Including a short printing guide in the download removes most of the messages this generates.
Do I need design software to make cards?
No. PromptlessPress produces the card design, the mockups and the full listing text together, so there is nothing to rebuild in a design tool afterwards.
Do I have to disclose that a card design was made with AI?
Yes. Etsy expects AI involvement to be disclosed on the listing, and the required disclosure text is written into every listing PromptlessPress produces, so it is not a separate task.
